Strenuous 10 miles reconnaissance ramble of Y Mynydd Du (Black Mountain), including ascent of Moel Gornach / Garreg Lwyd (a Hewitt; trig pillar S5314) Foel Fraith and Carn Fadog. Then a descent into a river valley, the route crossing of which turned out to be impossible because the river was in spate. Return via Cefn Carn Fadog, Carn Fadog and along Beacons Way, including disused lime quarry workings, just as dusk began falling.
